9 Harmless Computer Pranks That IT Won't Hate You For
The best computer pranks share three properties: they look catastrophic, they change nothing, and they end with everyone laughing — including the victim. Every prank below is fully reversible in seconds, installs nothing, and records nothing. Ground rules first, then the list.

The ground rules
- Only prank machines you are allowed to touch, and people who will find it funny afterward.
- Always reveal the joke yourself — before anyone calls IT, restarts mid-project, or actually panics.
- Never use a prank to ask for money, passwords, "repairs," or account details. That is a scam, not a prank.
- Skip anyone mid-deadline, mid-presentation, or mid-anything that matters. Timing is the whole art.

- The screenshot desktop. Take a screenshot of their desktop, set it as the wallpaper, then hide the real icons and taskbar. Every click lands on a picture. The undo is thirty seconds; the confusion is priceless.
- The rotated screen. Many graphics drivers still honor Ctrl+Alt+Arrow (or the display settings panel) to rotate the desktop 90 degrees. Rotate, walk away, keep a straight face. Same shortcut rotates it back.
- The autocorrect swap. Add one text replacement on their phone or word processor — "the" becoming "teh" is cruel enough. One rule: exactly one word, and you confess the same day.
